Lithium Battery Conversions

We receive a lot of questions about lithium batteries and converting from lead acid to lithium. Lithium batteries are great option for people that are away for long periods at a time. You don't want to come home to dead golf cart batteries, right? This is where lithium batteries offer a huge advantage.

  • They don’t require charging during those winter months when you're away.
  • There is virtually no care or maintenance during extended away times.
  •  Added advantage of exceptional performance and a life expectancy of up to double that of lead acid. (Yes, they are expensive, but they last longer, they’re maintenance- free, and they don't leave a mess on the garage floor.)
  • 5-year free replacement warranty on Valiant Lithium and 8-year free replacement on Samsung lithium vs standard 1-year on lead acid.
  • Considerably less weight with lithium vs lead acid.

We currently use Valiant & Samsung lithium batteries for our 48-volt conversions. Valiant offers a great value and works on vehicles such as EZGO, Club Car, and Yamaha. EZGO’s Samsung SDI lithium technology offers industry-leading technology, efficiency, and reliability at a bit higher price point.

Most lithium batteries have their own battery management system built right in. So typically, when you're converting a golf cart, there are two steps required. The first is to remove the lead acid batteries and reinstall a new lithium-ion battery.

The second requirement is to change your charger or update the programming of your charger because lithium batteries charge at a different rate than traditional lead acid, and the management system that controls the charging must work within certain parameters. Including charging and storage temperatures that don’t regularly fall below 0 degrees Celsius.

When you consider that it’s approximately $1000 more for a Valiant lithium upgrade vs replacing existing lead acid batteries, the long-term value and performance outweigh the initial cost for most people.

As technology continues to improve, we can expect to see wireless chargers emerge and integrated heating coils to allow extreme cold weather charging.
